Barnabas Project
The working poor are an often unrecognized group in Lincoln, and one that is particularly important in our outreach to the Belmont neighborhood. In conversations with members from Prince of Peace, we have recognized the need to help these families who work hard to support themselves, but sometimes fall just a little short. In many cases they just need encouragement and support to keep their family from falling into poverty. In response to this need, and in support of our neighbors in Belmont, Sheridan partners with members from Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and the People's City Mission in a new venture called the Barnabas Project. The ministry is named after Barnabas, who was Paul's partner on his first missionary journey and instrumental in Paul's early ministry. Barnabas means "the son of encouragement" and that is the goal of this ministry, to provide resources to encourage and support those working hard to care for their family. Through this partnership, we provide free clothing and other household goods to the working poor in the Belmont Neighborhood.
The Barnabas Project opened its doors on November 1st, 2008 and staffs the facility each week with volunteers. Volunteers are asked to commit to a three-hour volunteer shift, either from 9:00-12:00 or 12:00-3:00 PM. Volunteers greet guests coming into the Barnabas center and help stock shelves. There is no exchange of money at the Barnabas Project or donations accepted, we are simply there to give things away. This is a great volunteer opportunity for families and Sojourner's groups who want to volunteer weekly, monthly, or just once. Please consider joining us in making a difference in Belmont! Volunteer shifts can be selected online through Volunteer Matters at www.sheridanlutheran.org/serve or you may contact Pastor John in the church office with any questions.
