Worship Series

Joy for our Journey

Life can be hard and our journey difficult.  If we listened to the culture in which we live, we could easily be led to believe that true happiness can be obtained by acquiring, achieving, and accumulating.  However, when we buy into that philosophy, we soon discover that happiness that comes from worldly pleasures is temporary, at best, and leaves us empty again and again. We do not achieve a lasting happiness by improving our circumstances.  The apostle Paul, in the midst of difficult circumstances, writes a warm and joy-filled letter to the Philippians.  This letter will serve as our basis for a four part study of what it takes to become a truly joyful person for our journey through life.   Paul understood that true joy comes from pursuing God wholeheartedly, giving ourselves away, and learning to dwell on the good.  During this September series, we are encouraging you to study along by reading one chapter of Philippians each week.  We will be offering Bible study each Sunday at 9:45 in the Chapel as we examine each chapter of Philippians in depth.   These studies will be led by a member of our pastoral staff leading large group learning time with small group reflection and conversation.  Come before or after worship to enrich your understanding of these powerful pages of Scripture.

Week One: Read Philippians 1.  September 7  Living with a Joyful Attitude        A look at some basic principles that will help us retain our joy.

Week Two: Read Philippians 2.  September 14  Humility, The Key to Joy

As we look to the example of Christ we see a self-emptying love for others that brings true joy.

Week Three:  Read Philippians 3, September 21  Finding Peace  Our thought life and our prayer life affect our peace of mind.

Week Four:  Read Philippians 4, September 28  The Secret to Contentment  Happiness is not dependent on believing in yourself  and as Christians we discover that the journey to joy leads us to the cross of Christ.
