Missionate in 2008 – “Riding the Waves of the Spirit”

In January we introduced Missionate in 2008 as the compelling vision that God has for our Sheridan faith community for this year.  Missionate is God’s call for each one of us to serve others in need.

We believe this is God’s vision for Sheridan because this is God’s vision for all faith communities.  For example, this vision has been strongly emphasized as our Sheridan leaders have gathered in Dallas with leaders from the other nine congregations from across the United States who are a part of the Missional Renaissance Leadership Community.  Reggie McNeal from the sponsoring Leadership Network believes that we are part of a new Reformation which will redefine what it means to be church and create a new scorecard for all churches.

The same vision was reiterated by Pastor Tom Shirk of Boulder, Colorado who spoke at a Community Seminar on Poverty here in Lincoln on April 10.  Speaking to a large gathering of church and community leaders from across Lincoln, Pastor Shirk said it this way:

“A wave is cresting!  As a church, we need to rethink our role in our community.  We need to ask, ‘How can we do church in a way that honors God and reflects God’s care for his people.  How are we impacting our community for Christ?  Who would notice if our church disappeared?’  We need to be involved in our community as an expression of our faith and the love of God in Christ Jesus.  We need to be known as a church that cares for people.”

The Holy Spirit is sending wave after wave of challenge and opportunity our way.  As a faith community, we need to be in a position to ride these waves as God’s Spirit sends us out to live lives of ministry, service, and mission in our community, nation, and world.  Please make worship a strong priority in May as we are inspired by the winds of the Spirit to Missionate in 2008!  You will hear more about how we will ride the next wave of our spiritual journey – moving out from the church to serve others. The theme for  May 10-11 is Our Mission to Families and Children (Mother’s Day) – Bringing Christ’s love and salvation to our families and children and the facility needs to accomplish that mission – John 6: 1-14.
